Whetting the appetite

by Diane Dryden

Minong - This was the eighth year the Northwood Community Education, in conjunction with the Spooner Garden Club, hosted their New Ventures Gardening Seminar held in Minong at the school.

Eight years ago, the organizers hoped to have 50 attendees for their first event, and they had 75. Each year grows by leaps and bounds, and this year there were over 250 attendees who came from far away as Grand Marais, Bloomer, Wisconsin Rapids, Cable and all points in between. The crowd was pretty much mixed, one to one, men to women.

Mary Ellen Ryall's Monarch Butterfly Habitat booth was swamped with people at each break, and she handed out all the member applications that she had brought along and answered hundreds of questions.

The day that started at 8:30 a.m. with registration ended at 3:30 p.m., and the day went fast. Everyone that attended walked out with their own handwritten information, handouts, brochures and fliers of various nurseries in the area. Next year's seminar is no doubt already on their to-do list.
