Seniors show love to butterflies

By Mary Ellen Ryall

SHELL LAKE - The Senior Center hosted a film, The Monarch: A butterfly without borders, on Sept. 19. Marvin Schaeffer, formerly a beekeeper in Shell Lake, was in attendance as well as Curtis and Myrna Atkinson of Hertel, Mary Thompson of Cumberland, Carol Hubin and Lily Bakker of Shell Lake, and Eva Apelqvist, of Spooner. Apelqvist is the author of "Butterflies are forever," which was published in Up North Woman by the Spooner Advocate.

A butterfly art exhibit is featured at the senior center through September. Paintings by Carol Hubin and Angeline Klopp, of Terraceview Living Center, are on display. Sally Peterson, daughter of Angeline Klopp, donated the painting to Happy Tonics recently. The artwork will be part of a senior educational program that will commence regionally after January 2008.

After the film, Carol Hubin took a box of milkweed pods home. She helped clean seed for Happy Tonics milkweed seed distribution program. Seniors are interested in the plight of the monarch and are doing their part to help the butterfly.
