MONITORING NATIVE PLANTS AND INSECT SPECIES 2010
I planned to write a book on native species in 2010. My thought was to record research and field observations at the Monarch Butterfly Habitats, in Shell Lake, Wisconsin, USA, now that Climate Change is knocking at the door. I do maintain a personal Blog at www.insectamonarca.wordpress.com that is easy to post to. Also visit us at the nonprofit's Blog at www.happytonics.wordpress.com
Photos: Native Wildflower and Butterfly Gardens in Shell Lake 2010. This is our first monarch caterpillar in three years because of drought. We had no milkweed germinate until this year and no caterpillars. We had rain in 2010 and it has made all the difference in the world. Photo of sign by Victoria Zalatoris, first monarch caterpillar, evening lychnis and native grasses waving.
I learned about sustainability from native people in Mexico and South America over many years. The Third World knows how to take care of itself but even there nature is not safe. Many Governments and international businesses consider natural resources as a commodity instead of a means to support the human species. In reading Monarch of the Butterflies by Ken Parejko, I read that Michael Pyle, author of Chasing Monarchs, made a conscious decision to Blog before he publishes Swallowtail Seasons: The First Butterfly Big Year.
